| On September
12-14, 2004, leaders in industry, government, and academia came
together for an interactive conference designed to explore the
promises and challenges of open source. This unique event focused
on identifying potential solutions for strengthening open source
along with high level strategies for its adoption, implementation,
and market growth. Specially invited participants met to examine
the use and practice problems confronting open source with a goal
of beginning to resolve these issues. The conference provided
a unique opportunity to exchange ideas with decision-makers from
the buyer, vendor, and legislative sides. At the conference conclusion,
participants walked away with sane and rational solutions that
can be implemented to arrive at a manageable compromise in maximizing
software utility.
The conference focused on four key areas:
“The next big battleground between the
Open Source and proprietary software communities will be in the
area of Open Standards. You need Open Standards to implement Open
Source. However this need not be a battle.”
–Larry Rosen, Rosenlaw.com, LLC
Participants Attended to:
- Experience a unique opportunity to interact with leaders in
open source, information and communications technology (ICT),
government, and academia—along with open source users—to
facilitate collaboration opportunities and exchange ideas and
best practices
- Listen to and participate in balanced discussions and potential
solutions on the debate over open source vs. proprietary software
to gain knowledge that will facilitate better software decisions
- Identify key strategic issues and potential consequences
of current and impending legislative and punitive measures promoted
by software companies that wish to secure their proprietary
developments from competitive threats
- Walk away with viable solutions for addressing open source
challenges both in the market and in your own company
“Open source software and open standards
go together. This conference is of vital importance to all IT
managers."
